  • Vernon E. Byrd, 89 of Malvern, went to be with his Lord on Sunday, November 13, 2016 in Southside, Arkansas.  He was born February 3, 1927 to Will Buck and Clara Belle (Wilson) Byrd in Poyen, Arkansas.  He joined the Navy when he was 17 and served his time in California.  In 1946, he married Ernestine Holt of Bismarck, Arkansas.

    He was retired from Reynolds Metals.  He was a faithful member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. He loved going to church, singing in the choir, visiting his grandchildren, traveling and fishing.  He loved to talk and never met a stranger.  He was a hard working man and supported his two sons through pharmacy school.  He is preceded in death by his wife, his parents and 7 brothers and sisters.  He is survived by two sons and their wives, Jerry (Vera) Byrd of Batesville and Larry (Kathy) Byrd of Pine Bluff, one step daughter Gail (David) McMillan of Malvern, three grandchildren: Jerry Byrd, Jr (Krystal) of Bentonville, Sandra Byrd of Batesville, Laura Faulkner of Maumelle and 3 step grandchildren: Brandy (Jason) King of Pine Bluff, Charlie (Candace) McMillan of Bismarck and Marcus McMillan of Malvern, eleven great-grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews and many friends.

    Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM at the Atkinson Funeral  Home Chapel in Malvern AR Friday, November 18, 2016 with Bro. Aaron Holt officiating. Bro. Eli Maynard, pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Malvern will present the obituary. Visitation will be one hour prior to service at 1:00 PM. Pallbearers will be Charlie McMillan, Owen Holt, Wayne Thomas, Jerry Byrd, Jr., Dale Rhodes & Michael Rhodes.  Interment will follow at Forrest Hills Cemetery.

    Special thanks to Dr. Seth Barnes and the employees of Mountain Meadows Nursing and Rehabilitation in Southside, Arkansas for the care they gave him through the last five years of his Alzheimer’s disease.

    Love, prayers and sympathy to all the family in the loss of Vernon. I feel like I lost my husband when he passed away. It's so sad that people can't get the help when they are married that they can if they are not together. The hardest thing I've ever had to do. It's still heartbreaking. ~Joann~
